3 years of blogs!

This month I celebrate my 3rd year of Blogs and the in between. At the moment I’m not writing as much as I’d like to, but I’ve been so busy that it hasn’t been my main priority of late. But I wanted to write something to commemorate the occasion, how far I’ve come and why blogs are brilliant.

Back in the day

I created my blog when I was working for a content writing agency and things were getting ‘rocky’ shall we say. I was thinking of looking elsewhere for a job and considering I didn’t quite have a year of experience there yet. I thought a blog would be a great addition to my CV and help me show off a little to get to a place I really wanted to be.

As I write this I’m riding the train to work, typing away into the WordPress app . It’s so easy to start a blog these days and using something like WordPress means that your blog is accessible anywhere. I tend to either allocate time in coffee shops for writing blogs, or sometimes the moment comes to me and I’ll start by making notes or bullet points and I’ll return to them at a later date. I like working with headings because I think it’s easy to read and breaks up the text. It’s something I’ve always done so it’s a part of my blogging style.

Why should you start a blog?

It might just make you a smidge more employable! I’m no expert, but I feel that if I didn’t have my blog to accompany my cv then I wouldn’t have had as many interviews in the past. Every interviewer commented on my blog , asked me questions about the content and that combined with my colourfully designed cv helped to get me the wonderful job I’m in now.

Even if you don’t want to start a blog with a purpose that’s totally fine. A lot of people have certain topics they’re really passionate about that they want to cover like food, travel or beauty. I really didn’t know where I’d end up with my writing so I kept it open and vague and just chose to write about anything I wanted. I’ve stuck to that and it suits me to have a broad blog and not be restricted. Maybe in the future I will venture more down the business or marketing route or even an artsy vibe. Why knows ? All I know is that I’ll always write about what I want to, keeping it honest, as positive as possible and cute of course.

A blog is also like a public essay to the world. Anyone can see your content, read it, comment on it , quote it, share it, and you can start conversations. I used to like the idea of being the Carrie Bradshaw type of writer. Even to this day when I’m writing a piece I tend to imagine a voiceover reading my text out loud with sassy, yet monotone voice. It helps my writing flow and I think to myself , I have a blog , not everyone does, this is cool. You don’t have to be looking to boost your cv or hire-ability, you don’t have to be in your 20s and you don’t have to write about anything in particular.

Finally..

Clearly, I would highly recommend anyone start a blog for all of the reasons above. Don’t be scared to write about something you think others might not be interested in. It’s a truly great outlet.

Have a great day,
